Since the Smithsonian began collecting political memorabilia in the 1960s, curators have often attended rallies and conventions to acquire material from candidates and their supporters. This paper mask, representing Carter's famous grin, was purchased from a street vendor outside the 1976 Democratic National Convention in New York.
