Child's dress, 1876
A traveling grain salesman from Iowa purchased the fabric, printed with flags and stars to commemorate the U.S. Centennial, for a dress for his baby daughter. A century later a family member who had inherited the dress donated it to the Smithsonian in honor of the U.S. Bicentennial.
