U.S. Model 1866 carbine, 1881
U.S. soldiers captured this rifle from Sioux warriors fighting under Chief Low Dog at Poplar River, Montana Territory, in 1881. The rifle was exhibited at the Military Service Institution's museum in New York until 1922, when the museum closed and its collections were transferred to the Smithsonian.
